PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

To paraphrase a famous President of the USA, "ask not what your branch can do for you but ask what you can do for your branch." A very small number of branch members are working very hard to keep the doors of St. James Legion open. Are you doing your part?

Yearly dues are $46.00 ($41 if you are an Early Bird) of which $28.61 has to be paid to Dominion and Provincial Command for the Legion magazine and the per capita costs. This leaves $15.39 (10.39 if you are an Early Bird) to operate the branch. Keeping the cost of products you purchase at the bar reasonable means that the bar profits just meet the cost of operating the bar with very little left over to cover the remainder of the expenses occurred in keeping the building in good repair as well as covering the on-going maintenance costs. Profits from Meat Draws; ongoing basket raffles; Chase the Ace; Texas hold-em and 50/50 must raise enough money to pay the utility and maintenance. Some months, in particular, the summer months the expenses are greater than the income. Without the small dedicated group of members volunteering their time to look after these events the front doors of the branch would like many others in the country be closing permanently. We can't let this happen. Are you doing your part to keep our doors open?

In the near future, watch for construction to start in the branch. We are presently waiting for quotes to come in for the renovations of our bathrooms. The branch applied for a grant from the government and it was announced that St. James legion would be receiving up to $100,000.00 for those renovations.

Don't forget our Remembrance Day service at Bruce Park this year. It is always a very moving ceremony and well attended. Parade steps off from Assiniboine Hotel at 10:45 as usual. Hope to see you all there. Everyone is invited back to the Branch after the service for some socializing.

The Poppy campaign is well under way, but as in past years we will still require a lot of help. Check the bulletin board for empty slots that you can fill. It's only with your help that we can raise the funds needed to support our needy veterans. During your initiation into the Legion each and every one of you declared that you will "ever strive by all proper means to promote the work of the organization including active participation in the Poppy campaign."

Seems a little early for this, but as this is the last bulletin before Christmas and the New Year I'll pass on those messages now. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

To all our shut-ins I wish a speedy recovery and I hope to see you all in the branch clubrooms in the near future.

I wish also to thank all of the staff members without whom it would be impossible to operate. Office, Bar, Maintenance, you are all important. THANK YOU

Cde. Ronn Anderson, President

CHILDREN'S COMMITTEE

The second annual Children's Halloween Party was held on Sunday, October 26th. 42 Jack'o Lanterns were carved by the Children in attendance. There were an incredible number of great costumes entered in the parade and costume contest. Mago entertained with balloon animals, spiders, swords, bow & arrows and other spectacular constructions. A new game at this year's event was the waterless doughnut bobbing contest. The children all departed on a sugar high with prizes a won and even more candy. There were several parents and grandparents costumed for the event. This event has even furthered the belief that our legion hall is haunted by a red devil faced, black robed ghost, as he was not seen arriving or leaving but reportedly seen by many during the party.

A Special thanks to Brenda (Stu), Joel (Pid), Shawn (Woody), and Nathan (Dr. Proctor) who assisted in the games and entertainment making the party a great success. Also thanks to Betty Zarney, Al Coote, and Mike Thayer for the kitchen work and service of refreshments.

Reminder

This Year's Children's Christmas event will be a "Breakfast with Santa Clause" and will be held on SUNDAY DECEMBER 7th Branch Members who wish to bring their children and grandchildren, or just want to come and enjoy these fun are advised to again watch for the posters that will be posted in the branch so that they may sign up on the provided forms. These forms will be available at the branch office (during branch office hours) or from staff at the bar.

Cde. Chris Lundgren, Children's Committee Chair

WAY'S and MEANS

Our Thanksgiving draw on October 11/14 was won by Jackie Brown who was in attendance, and was very happy to win. Thank-you to all those who entered the draw. Our next draw will be the Christmas basket, which will be held on December 20/14. I would like to thank the following who donated towards the basket: Murdoch Jardine, Jim Simm, Jane Deller, Kay McKinnon, Mike Thayer, Betty Zarney, Judy Appelt, Len Hintz, Kendall Catering, Wpg. Police Pipe Band, St. Leon's Garden, and Linda Morley. Without the generosity of these people and companies, it would be extremely hard to continue to have superb baskets. I would also like to thank Al Coote, Debi Pointkoski, and the bar staff for their help.

The sale of Grey Cup tickets are doing fine. Just a reminder to have your tickets and money returned no later than November 22/14. If any are looking for books to sell, they have been distributed.

Mobility Aids

The Branch has a limited number of mobility aids such as wheelchairs, and canes that are available on loan to our members. If you are in need of a mobility aid on a temporary basis, stop by the Branch to view the items available and determine if one might meet your short term needs.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS

On your way downstairs to the main lounge, there is a wooden box marked "St James Legion Supports the Troop's Family" if you have any spare change please throw it in to support our Troop's family.

Also have a look at the wall behind the bar; we are selling items for the MFRC (Military Family Resource Centre" to help the Troops and their families. Support your troops on Friday by wearing RED.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

In recent years we have lost many Comrades available for the important duty of Honorary Pallbearers who are needed to honor our fallen Veterans. I would like to request volunteers for this duty, if you can spare sometime in the AM or PM to attend various funerals and have a Legion uniform. I would appreciate you getting in touch with me at 889-8225 or leave your name and phone number at the Branch office. Thank you in advance for your co-operation

Cde. Eric Murphy, Service Officer & Pensions

OVER 55

We are now into Fall, hasn't been that bad outside and we are not getting any rain.

Eunice Harvey had a bad fall, Robert Robinson had a triple by-pass. He is coming along, not rushing and cards have been sent.

We lost a member on Sept1/14 Eleanor Hanson, Also we will keep in our prayers - Bud Dibley. I have spoken to Marie Sawatzky, takes each day as it comes. Peter is sometimes a little forgetful.

Our Corn Roast, Sept 14/14 was a success. We had 73 people out and the food was great. The games went over well. We also had a Bottle Draw and a 50/50 Draw. We all had a good day.

Our Christmas Dinner will be on Sunday, Nov 30/14. It will be a Turkey Dinner. Tickets will be out at our next meeting, Marjorie Suddick will have tickets, so get them early.

If you can't make it to the meeting, you will get a call. We always have a good time.

LAST POST

Heaven's gate swung gently open, the Master called softly "Come" and you Dear one took the Master's hand and your work on earth was done. We'll never cease to miss you and shed many silent tears because we cannot share with you Our hopes, Our joys, Our fears. But one day in God's garden when the master calls us to come, You'll be at the gates with open arms and say to us "Welcome home".

It is with deep sympathy the Branch records the passing of the following Comrades since our last review. The Officers, Executives and members extend their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

They shall grow not old
As we are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them,
Nor do the years condemn.

We will remember them.
