PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Comrades and friends of the Legion

This seems like it's a little early, but this is the last bulletin before the events occur so I'll pass on these messages now.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Halloween is almost over (or over, depending on when you read this) and Remembrance Day is coming. Don't forget our service at Bruce Park on the 11th of November. It is always a very moving ceremony and well attended. Parade steps off from Lyle St, which is west of the Assiniboine Hotel on Portage Avenue at 10:45. I hope to see you all there. There will be a reception at the branch after the parade.

October was Nomination Day for our elections to the Executive for 2016. Election for the position of 3rd Vice-President will be held on the 10th of December, with an advance poll on the afternoon of Saturday December 5.

The Poppy Campaign is well under way, but as in past years we still require a lot of help. Check the bulletin board for empty time slots that you can fill. It's only with your help that we can raise the funds needed to support our veterans.

We will once again start off The New Year with a Levee. This is a casual Meet and Greet on New Year's Day where you will be able to come out and meet your fellow members in a casual manner.

All the very best to our shut-in members and a get well quick to those who are ill

.

Cde. Ronn Anderson, President

PPCLI CADETS

The training year 2015-16 is in full progress. New cadets are being enrolled into the program. Senior cadets have been assigned increased responsibilities consistent with the training they received during the summer camp period.

Other cadets have reached the maximum allowable age and have continued their development by attending post-secondary educational training.

The corps is still actively recruited new cadets. They meet every Tuesday evening beginning at 1830 at Romeo Daillaire School which is located at 81 Quail Ridge Road. If you know of anyone who might be interested in the challenges of cadets, please refer them to 2701 PPCLI Cadets.

Summer Training

Summer training is that time of year when cadets have an opportunity to participate in special training. Some have an opportunity to training abroad and train with cadets from other countries.

One cadet, Cadet MWO Nathalie Castagner, was selected for training in the United Kingdom.

The following is a synopsis of her summer experience.

  • Pre-course in Connaught (meet the other 19 Canadian team members on the exchange)
  • Training course in Crowborough (first week in England) an introduction to the British cadet system
  • Cadet Leadership Course in Frimley Park (testing our new knowledge learned from the first week in England, fine tuning weapon skills acquired, and being put into leadership positions)
  • Adventure training (Basic rock climbing course)
  • Cultural week - touring cities and visiting historical sites
  • Return to Canada for de-kit and graduation parade

My experience and thoughts throughout the exchange:

  • A life changing experience. I loved experiencing every aspect of a new culture including everything from the busy cities to the country side.
  • Working as a team of Canadians in a different country taught me a lot about being a good member of a team and even more about how to lead one effectively.
  • The most interesting part was learning how different the British cadet system is compared to the Canadian one.
  • The Cadet Leadership Course during the second week in England was the most difficult week of cadets I've ever been through and arguably the most rewarding.
  • I loved working with the British cadets and officers! They were all supportive and had a great sense of humour
  • The best part of the exchange was making friendships that I hope will last the rest of my life
  • Wonderful opportunities presented to the Canadians on the exchange such as: new training style, gain new field skills, consolidate weapon knowledge, learn about English history, see some beautiful countryside views, learn great leadership skills that you can bring back to your own home corps
  • I highly recommend every Canadian cadet to strive to apply for this opportunity because you will not regret it.

Scholarships

Several prestigious scholarships are available to cadets. Cadet MWO Nathalie Castagner was the proud winner of two of them.

The first was the Lieutenant Laurence Gillmor Sherman Award, which is a $1,000.00 scholarship that is presented by the Hubbell Awards. Nathalie was presented with her scholarship in a special ceremony held in the rotunda of the Manitoba Legislative Building.

She was also a winner of 2015 Manitoba Support Our Troops Scholarship that is awarded by the Province of Manitoba. The value of that scholarship was also $1,000.00.

Nathalie is currently enrolled in the University of Manitoba and plans to study dentistry.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

In recent years we have lost many Comrades available for the important duty of Honorary Pallbearers who are needed to honor our fallen Veterans. I would like to request volunteers for this duty, if you can spare sometime in the AM or PM to attend various funerals and have a Legion uniform. I would appreciate you getting in touch with me at 889-8225 or leave your name and phone number at the Branch office. Thank you in advance for your co-operation

LAST POST

Heaven's gate swung gently open, the Master called softly "Come" and you Dear one took the Master's hand and your work on earth was done. We'll never cease to miss you and shed many silent tears because we cannot share with you Our hopes, Our joys, Our fears. But one day in God's garden when the master calls us to come, You'll be at the gates with open arms and say to us "Welcome home".

It is with deep sympathy the Branch records the passing of the following Comrades since our last review. The Officers, Executives and members extend their heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
